The only candidate we can support in MN-06 (home to Michelle Bachmann)

This diary is written half-heartedly.  I am not a huge fan of El, the only reason I am writing this is he is challenging Michelle Bachmann (the light bulb lady, the Bush kisser, the utter embarassment).

Um yeah, so he isn't her.

For those of you who are conservative democrats El has been endorsed by the blue dogs.
http://www.tinklenberg08.com/

The good points I can come up with (I spent a lot of time on this)
He isn't Michelle Bachmann.
I don't believe he is crazy (like Michelle Bachmann)
He favors Pay as you Go budgets
He favors expanding SCHIP (I am warming up)
He favors Universal Health Care (hey not bad...)
Actually his issues page isn't that bad (but notice what is absent)
http://www.tinklenberg08.com/issues.html

So here is why I am less than enthusiastic (from wikipedia as I am lazy):

he ran on a platform that supported jobs, education, transportation and as a socially conservative Democrat who opposed legalized abortion and supported a Federal Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage.

That is why I am not enthusiastic like I am for Madia and Sarvi.

However El might be coming around:

Tinklenberg's stance on abortion changed from opposing legalized abortion, to stating publicly he would not vote for legislation that would overturn Roe v Wade. Tinklenberg reversed his stance from supporting a Federal Marriage Amendment to supporting civil unions.

but he is corporate democrat:

Closer to the Sixth District DFL Convention, Olson's critiques of Tinklenberg grew sharper. Tinklenberg was accused of supporting the use of taconite tailings in transportation aggregate. Tinklenberg contended that, indeed, he did support the use of western Iron Range taconite tailings in transportation aggregate through a University of Minnesota Natural Resources Research Institute program, which was backed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The University's research concluded that taconite tailings from the western side of the Iron Range were safe for use in road construction, unlike the by-product from the eastern side of the Range, which had been linked to an increased risk to cancer.[7] Tinklenberg reiterated that he would only support the sustainable use of western Iron Range taconite tailings as long as the research showed it to be a safe practice.[8]

Tinklenberg was also accused of not complying with lobbying registration regulations. Through his work as a transportation consultant, Tinklenberg had been hired as an advisor to a number of counties and municipalities. Because his work required him to have contact with state legislators, Tinklenberg was required to register as a lobbyist in the state of Minnesota. On February 27, 2008, Eric Zaetsch, a local liberal blogger, filed a complaint with the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board. The Board found Tinklenberg to be in full compliance with the law.

So he isn't Bachmann, he has decent stances (though not great) and is probably the best we could do in a district like MN-06:

At the state convention in Ro(ck)chester, El was not a presence.  I think he is going on the Tim Mahoney model of democrat, but he would be better than Bachmann.

If you really feel like (2.00 / 1)

throwing him some money (it is to defeat Bachmann), then you can visit his website here:

(He isn't so bad but we have better candidates to support who are in close races like Madia, Sarvi and Walz)

Re: If you really feel like (2.00 / 1)

I almost want to see her be the last member of our delegation to be a republican.  I think it would be high comedy.  It really is too bad we can't get a decent candidate to run against her.  I almost want to move to shoreview or something just to try and run against her.

Then again, I get scared when I leave the city ;)

Keep it up with the MN races though, there are a few good ones this year.

El (none / 0)

is about the best we can get, Patty Wetterling proved herself a horible campaigner by doing worse in 2006 than in 2004.

The 6th is a really tough area, it is the only hard-core red district in MN.  Even the 2nd will go democratic once in a while (Amy K carried it).

Ugh... (2.00 / 1)

Nothing worse than have to say, one is not the other.  I am lucky, I live in Tancredo's district in Colorado, he aint running!  But, I can find no information on Hank Eng, who is the Democrat running for his seat.  I have sent emails to both my county and state party asking them to get some information out there.

Sadly, Jefferson County Colorado has been all but forsaken by our state and local party officials, especially my district.  Sigh....

Would tip and rec, but you know....

here in MN (none / 0)

the state party is committed to competing in every district.  The state party has paid staff working each district because as Tim Walz showed a good candidate in the right year can win and we need to maximize the chances of that happening.

Um yeah, so he isn't her.

In this case, that's all the reason I need.

MB is an embarrassment to Minnesota.

That she is (none / 0)

But I think other candidates for congress are better, but they do not have as embarrassing opponents.

Ugh, gross. (2.00 / 1)

Opposed to abortion and for a Constitutional ban on gay marriage. Yekh. I mean, at least he's not Bachmann, but... ugh.

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.
by sricki on Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 04:33:46 PM EST

Yeah (2.00 / 1)

He is still holding his positions from 2006 (I don't have proof of that as I heard it in an interview on Air America and couldn't find the link), but he says he won't vote on Roe v Wade and that he favors civil unions (bones to the liberal base in the 6th, but not too offensive to the republicans one needs to grab in this district).  You are right in that he isn't Bachmann otherwise I wouldn't waste a diary on him.

Michelle Bachmann:

Believes God wants her to be a U.S. Representative:

Denies Global Warming:

Loves President Bush

and the Iraq War

Is El Tinklenberg perfect? No, but the MN-06 is the 2nd most Conservative District in the State (CPVI = R +5).  Nonetheless, he has a chance to beat one of the craziest Republicans in the House and thats important.

by WellstoneDem on Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 04:37:16 PM EST

He's about as good as Colin Peterson (none / 0)

he is better than a republican, but that doesn't mean he is fantastic.

That said Michelle is frakking crazy and needs to go back to Crawford with Bush.

Yeah, so... support this guy (none / 0)

He's a competant technocrat with detailed knowledge of transportation issues... if there's anything that we need in Minnesota right now, it's to elect people that know what the hell they're doing when dealing with MNDOT matters.

It was actually pretty canny to send a pro-lifer to go against Bachmann; the strategy is working really well for us, as the mid-term elections have been proving.  We can worry about the ramifications later.

Remember, if they're Democrats, we have caucus leverage on them.

Also: not Bachmann.

In this avalanche, the pebbles get to vote.
by Dracomicron on Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 04:57:02 PM EST

Yeah (none / 0)

he is as good as we can hope for in the 6th.  Hopefully he knocks off Bachmann, but his best attributes is that he is not  Michelle Bachmann.
